I Googled my own brain at 1am with the bathroom extractor fan on so the search would not feel like a confession to the flat. The tiles were cold on my feet. The phone made that pale light that makes every query look like a crime. Most of what I found was ordinary. A few things I kept as thought only.

If you are here asking is my kink normal, I have stood in that same small room with the same question. The short answer is that normal is a wide street, shame is a terrible map, and you do not have to act on every picture that arrives.

Is my kink normal, or is that the wrong street

Normal, in the sense I trust, means: other adults have this thought, it does not require anyone who cannot consent, and it does not have to become a project. That is a wide street. It includes wanting to be held still, wanting to watch, wanting to be praised, wanting a story in bed that would look silly in a supermarket. It includes pegging you have only joked about and wrists and a word and things you will never book.

Who uses the question: people who were taught that wanting was a bit much. People who found a picture in their head and immediately put a lid on it. People whose partner said something and now the lid will not sit. I have been all three. The search box is a private room. It is also a bit of a liar, because it shows you the loudest versions.

Whether the question is useful: a little. It lets you put the secret down. Then you need better ones. Do I want this in a room or only in a thought. Would I still want it if I had to ask out loud. Does it need another person, and have they said yes.

My opinion, which is not a clinic: most of what adults hide is common. The shame is the unusual part. Shame makes an ordinary curiosity feel like a character flaw. I have wasted good sleep on that trick.

What the question cannot do: sort legal from illegal, or kind from unkind. If the picture involves someone who is not an adult, you do not get a blog's blessing. You get a hard stop. If the picture involves doing a thing to someone who has not asked for it, that is not a kink. That is a plan you do not get to have.

I have a list. Some of it I have done. Some of it I have told. Some of it I have kept, on purpose, because the thought is hotter than the logistics and I like my logistics boring.

Common kinks people hide

I am not going to give you a league table. These are the ones I keep meeting, in myself and in people who have trusted me with a sentence.

Being told what to do, or doing the telling. Stay there. Wait. Look at me. I have wanted both, on different nights, and felt silly about both until I said them.

Being held, or holding. Hands, a scarf, the weight of someone who has agreed to stay. I have written about scarves before hardware. Wanting to be unable to move does not make you weak in the rest of the week. It means you like a stretch of not deciding.

Watching, or being watched a little. A mirror. A door left more open than usual. The legal version is a conversation. The version that involves strangers who did not agree is a different problem, and not a cute one.

Praise. I have flushed at a kind sentence and then pretended I had not. A story in bed that would sound daft in a queue. Daylight is not the audience.

Wanting to try something with a body part you were told was only for one job. Pegging lives here for a lot of couples. So does a finger, a small toy, a curiosity about a prostate that nobody named at school. The hide is the joke. The joke is how men especially are taught to leave the room before they have to mean it.

Things I have met and do not have. A foot fetish, for instance. I have sat across from someone who did, and the kind version was specific and a bit tender, and the unkind version was a surprise. It is not mine. I do not need it to be mine to know it is common.

Degradation, which some people like as a scene and some people use as a personality. If you like being called a name you have chosen, in a room you can leave, that is a kink with a door. If someone pours it over you as a greeting, that is not your kink arriving. That is them. I will explain the difference. I will not practise it on you from this page.

Fantasy versus wanting it in real life

This is the useful split. I learnt it late.

A fantasy is a picture that does work in your head. It can be messy, rude, impossible, or unkind in a way you would never book. The picture is not a booking. I have thoughts I would not invite into a room with another person. I still have them. I do not owe them a diary slot.

Wanting it in real life is a smaller list. It has logistics. It has another adult's face. It has a way out. When I tell a partner a fantasy, I try to say which pile it is in. Thought only. Curious, if you are. I would like to try a small version.

I have mixed the piles out loud before. He heard a to-do list. I had meant a weather report. That is on me.

You can keep a thought as a thought forever. You can try a small version and put it back. You can try it and like it and still not want it every week. None of those is hypocrisy. Bodies are allowed to be inconsistent.

What is not a fantasy: a plan you run on someone who has not been asked. A partner who is asleep. A stranger who cannot leave. If you have to hide the doing, not just the wanting, you already know which pile you are in.

Alcohol makes the piles blur. One drink can loosen a sentence. Several drinks can make a yes that will not be there in the morning. If drink is in the room, the curiosity waits. I have ignored that and been lucky. Luck is not a method.

When to talk to a professional

Most of this does not need a professional. It needs a quieter search, a kinder sentence, and maybe a conversation on a sofa.

I would take it somewhere other than a blog if any of these are true.

The thought is only satisfying when it involves someone who cannot consent, or someone who has not. That is not a quirky preference. That is a stop.

The thought is running the diary. You cannot work, sleep, or be in a room with a person you like because the picture has taken the week. Compulsion is a different shape from curiosity. I cannot sort your week from here. A GP can point you at the right door. A therapist who is used to sex without flinching can help you see whether the picture is a want or a loop.

The doing is hurting you, or someone else, in a way you cannot stop. Pain you asked for in a scene is one thing. Pain you cannot leave is another.

You feel frightened of yourself, not just shy. Shy I know. Frightened is worth handing to someone whose job is that room.

Shame that will not move after you have named the thing and found it common. Sometimes the shame is older than the kink. The kink is just the coat it wears. I have had a taste of that. I did not fix it with a clever search.

I am a blogger. I have tried a lot and got some of it wrong. I do not diagnose. If you need a person in a chair, go and find one.

What I do not do, and still like thinking about

I have a small private cinema. I am not going to give you a tour that would embarrass a future me, and I am not going to pretend the cinema is empty.

There are nights I think about being watched by someone who is not in the room. I have not arranged an audience. I have left a lamp on and liked the idea of the window more than I liked the risk. The thought stays a thought. The legal version of public is a different, narrower conversation, and I am careful with it.

There are nights I think about being spoken to more sharply than I actually enjoy when the sentence lands. In the head it is hot. In the room I go polite and small. I have learnt to keep the sharp version on the reel and ask for firm, not mean, when I am made of skin.

There are pictures that involve more than two people in a shape I have not booked. I have been a third. I still have versions I will not arrange, because the week would ask more than I want to give.

I do not have a foot thing. I have sat next to one and been kind about a sock. That is the whole story.

I do not degrade people I have not agreed that with. The thought of a chosen word, in a chosen hour, I understand. The rest can stay off this page.

Keeping a thought is not cheating on a life you have chosen. Acting in secret on a person who thinks they know the rules might be. Those are different sentences.

FAQ

How do I know if a kink is normal?

If other adults have it, if it needs consent, and if you can leave it as a thought when you choose, you are on the wide street. Common is not the same as compulsory. Rare is not the same as wrong. The useful test is not a poll. It is whether the want can live next to kindness and a door you can open.

Are dirty fantasies cheating?

Not by themselves. A picture in your head is not a second relationship. Sharing a picture with someone who is not your partner, in secret, can become a different thing, depending on the rules you have actually agreed. I have thought about people who were not in the bed. I have not built a second life out of it. If you are using the fantasy to leave a room you have not admitted you want to leave, the fantasy is a symptom. The relationship is the conversation.

Should I tell my partner every kink?

No. Tell the ones that want a place in the shared room, or the ones that are taking up so much space they are already in the room. You do not owe anyone a full inventory. I have kept some. I have offered others as a small version, with a way out. Flooding someone with the whole cinema is how you get a face that closes. One true thing. Their face. Room to say not that.

When is a kink a problem?

When it needs someone who cannot consent. When you cannot stop, and the rest of your life is losing. When the doing ignores a no. When you are frightened of yourself. Those are problems. Liking a scarf, a story, a bit of being told, a thought you will never book: those are a person with a body. If the shame is the problem, name the want and see how much of the shame was only the secrecy. If the shame stays large, take it to a person who is trained for large.

I sort the piles when the week is quiet, not when I am trying to be impressive. The ones that stay thoughts can stay. The ones that want a room can wait for a sentence I am willing to hear said back.
